Fantaisie Fuguée (2014)

composer, performer, mixer

Fantaisie Fuguée is one of my first ventures into imitative and contrapuntal writing. The piece draws inspiration from the particular tone and style of Shostakovich's Piano Quintet in G minor Op. 57, which I had been studying for my senior thesis. While lacking the formal training to complete a classical fugue, I experimented with numerous techniques and structures which were unfamiliar to me at the time, such as inverted motifs and rhythmic augmentations. The violinist Vanessa de Luze and I, on piano, performed and recorded Fantaisie Fuguée at the Conservatory of Lausanne in the fall of 2014.
