Fantaisie Fuguée , previously titled Fughetta in C minor, was written in September 2014 upon completion of my senior year thesis which I wrote on Shostakovich’s Quartet with Piano Op. 57 – the main source of inspiration for this piece. I realized that having never taken formal composition lessons (at the time at least) I would never be able to compose a full fugue; therefore, I chose to write a Fughetta, as an exercise in contrapuntal writing despite its many non-conformities. I also experimented with inverting motifs and themes as well as augmenting (rhythmically) these themes. Vanessa de Luze performed the violin with myself on the piano for the demo recording. I plan to rerecord it this Summer with better equipment and a little more practice.
